Why does the body need Coenzyme Q10?
The vitaminoid coenzyme Q10, also called Q-10, ubiquinone-10 or UQ, is a fat-soluble molecule that is similar in structure to vitamins K and E. Q10 is not essential for healthy people.
Q10 plays an important role in producing energy in the body's cells. That is why it is mainly found in the lungs, liver and heart, i.e. in organs that require a lot of energy. As ubiquinone (ubique = everywhere), Coenzyme Q10 is needed and produced in all living cells. It also intercepts harmful oxygen compounds and acts as an antioxidant, similar to vitamin E. It is not known how much Coenzyme Q10 the body needs/produces per day.
With increasing age, the Q10 concentration in various tissues decreases significantly. The heart is particularly affected. Compared to 20-year-olds, 80-year-olds only have around 60 percent of the Q10 content in their hearts. The extent to which these are effects of the normal aging process and whether these can be stopped by supplementation or whether an additional, controlled administration of Q10 leads to fewer cardiovascular diseases in old age is still being discussed. However, this explains the frequent advertising of Q10 products as anti-aging agents, "fountain of youth" or "energy vitamin" and the frequent sale on so-called "coffee trips". But the latter will soon come to an end.
