Lactase (ß-galactosidase) is a digestive enzyme that breaks down the lactose in milk and milk products into harmless, simple sugars, glucose and galactose. People who lack this enzyme are unable to fully utilize lactose, which can lead to very unpleasant symptoms. The lactase enzyme improves lactose digestion in individuals who have trouble digesting lactose.
